$2.1 billion lost to ‘crypto’ exploits in 2025: CertiK
#1
In the first five months of 2025, over $2.1 billion in digital assets were stolen by cybercriminals, with most losses stemming from wallet compromises, private key mismanagement, and social engineering tactics like phishing, according to blockchain security firm CertiK. This marks a shift in attack focus from blockchain code to human vulnerabilities, highlighted by major incidents such as the $1.5 billion Bybit hack and a $330 million theft from an elderly U.S. citizen. Despite previous years setting records in attack numbers and stolen amounts, 2025 is on pace to surpass them all. At the same time, Cisco reports that only 4% of global businesses are adequately prepared for modern cyber threats, as AI-driven attacks grow more sophisticated. While AI also aids in threat detection and response, a global shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals continues to widen the vulnerability gap.
